Julane Sullivan Hugg, age 91, of Burlington died 5:48 p.m. Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born on August 7, 1926 in Macomb, Illinois, she was the daughter of the Lucy Derry Sullivan and Carl Rexroat Sullivan. On March 21, 1948, she married James "Jim" Reichert Hugg.
She lived in Adair, Illinois until 1942 when her family moved to Burlington, Iowa. She graduated from Burlington High School class of 1944 and then attended Southeastern Community College. In 1972, Julane returned to Southeastern Community College and graduated in 1974 with her AA degree. While finishing her degree, she took part in the college's production of Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible". She also "mothered" some of her young fellow students.
Julane worked as a secretary at Murray Iron Works and at the Iowa Memorial Union where she helped put Jim through school.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and over the years served as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon. Julane was a member of Chapter NH of PEO, Norman Circle of King's Daughters, Burlington Golf Club, YWCA and served on the Civic Music committee. She was a member and past President of the Burlington Hospital Auxillary. In 1980, she was co-chairman of the Tour of Homes. Later in life, she volunteered as a greeter for the Welcome Center at the Port of Burlington.
Julane loved to dance and in her younger days she danced and sang at county fairs and other local events. Later in life she and Jim enjoyed the Cotillion Dance group. She was a cheerleader at Adair High School and played percussion in the band at Adair and Burlington High School. Julane was a pioneer of Aerobics exercise; running and exercising before it became popular. She and Jim made annual trips to Cooper Aerobic Clinic in Dallas, Texas for 20 years. One of her life highlights was receiving a gold medal for her age group in a two-mile sponsored by the Burlington Medical Center. Another life highlight was her hole-in-one on the third hole at Burlington Golf Club.
Some of her other loves were bridge, tennis and knitting. She produced many sweaters as well as Christmas stockings for the whole family. She rarely missed Wheel of Fortune. Julane was always ready for traveling especially to the places she loved: the home in Scottsdale, Arizona, the cabin on Otter Island and Hawaii. She was a die-hard University of Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Julane adored her husband Jim and dearly loved her family. Her family was her life and her love was never ending.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother. She is survived by her husband Jim; daughter, Connie (Bill) of Newark, California; sons Steven (Julie) of Marion, Iowa and Martin (Teresa) of Burlington. Her five grandchildren are: Jaclyn Hugg of Chicago, Illinois, Jena (Aaron) Conway of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jarrett Hugg of Toyota City, Japan; Anna Salino-Hugg of Iowa City; and Michael Salino-Hugg of Iowa City. She had two great-grandsons.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Great River Hospice. Their level of dedication and care for Julane in her last days were a heartwarming blessing to our family and we cannot thank them enough.
