David Benson Howell, 74, of New London, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at New London Nursing & Rehab Center in New London. Born April 20, 1934, in Burlington, he was the son of Charles Clifford Howell and Moudie McCandlass Howell Benson. On April 19, 1963, he married Ilene Holmes in Burlington. Mr. Howell worked at J.I. Case Co. in Burlington for 32 years, retiring in 1989. He attended Burlington High School and served in the Army. He enjoyed going to auctions, restoring antique radios, polishing rocks and collecting coins. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Howell of Virginia and Bryan Howell of New London; one daughter, Beth Niec of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one half brother, Ralph Howell of Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, one brother and one half sister. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The graveside funeral with military rites for Mr. Howell will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, with the Rev. Rod Cooper officiating. Memorials have been established for New London Fire and Rescue and New London Country Club.
