Obituary
Stephen M. "Steve" Hoschek, 81, of Burlington, died at noon Monday, March 5, 2007, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born December 8, 1925, in Burlington, he was the son of Carl and Agnes C. Walsh Hoschek. On November 5, 1945, he married Leona L. Griffith in Burlington.
Steve was a firefighter for the city of Burlington for 36 years. His greatest joy was time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was lovingly referred to as "Big Steve" or "Uncle Steve" by friends and fellow firefighters. Steve loved to dance and never sat down until the music stopped playing. Steve loved his monthly meetings with friends and fellow classmates of his BHS 1945 graduation class. After his stroke in 2001, he sat in his lift chair in front of the picture window waving to friends and neighbors walking by. It became a daily ritual. He enjoyed the time he spent at the family cabin, duck and pheasant hunting, fishing and vegetable gardening. He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge and Fire Fighter's Local 301.
Steve is survived by his wife, Leona, of Burlington; one daughter, Sue (Craig) Spear of Burlington; four sons, Michael Hoschek of Davenport, Thomas (Mary) Hoschek, Timothy (Sue Frice) Hoschek, S. Scott (Kris) Hoschek, all of Burlington; 12 grandchildren, Jessica, Adam, Andrea, Tammy, Emilee, Dean, Melissa, Megan, Kelsie, Keaton, Derek and Amie; eight great-grandchildren, Blaise, Brennon, Taylor, Logan, Garrett, Brooklynne, Kamden and Hayden.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Charles, James and Paul, and one sister, Kotzy Jay.
Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf will officiate a private family service at 5:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Iowa Firefighters Association, Coralville, Iowa, Burlington Fire Department Ambulance "Advancement Fund," or Burlington Homeless Shelter.
