Jessie Elizabeth Holstein, 84, of Burlington, died at 7:20 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2008, at Great River Medical Center Klein Center in Burlington. Born December 29, 1923, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ralph Solomon and Clara Opal West Drain. After the death of her mother when she was 8 years old, she was raised by her stepmother, Peggy Mae Drain. On July 31, 1943, she married George Ernest Holstein in Denver, Colorado. He died November 18, 2005. Mrs. Holstein worked at IRC/TRW for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She was a graduate of Burlington High School and a member of Zion United Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, and talking on the telephone with friends. Survivors include two sons, George Holstein of Gainesville, Fla., and John Holstein of Dallas City, Ill.; one daughter, Carolyn Puhy of Burlington; five grandsons; three great-granddaughters; six great-grandsons; two sisters, Geraldine Bullard and Phyllis Petersen, both of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Visitation will be from noon to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The graveside committal service and burial for Mrs. Holstein will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Tyrone Henderson officiating. Those planning to attend the service, please meet at the Sunnyside Avenue entrance by 10:15 a.m. A memorial has been established.
