Jack E. Holmberg, 89, of Winter Haven, Fla., died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla. Born May 10, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Ed and Myla Hingst Holmberg. On June 2, 1946, he married Pauline Beckman. She preceded him in death. Mr. Holmberg worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 40 years and trained many machinist apprentices. He retired in 1982, and he and Pauline moved to Florida.
He was an active church member and in 1950 learned to play the organ and was a church organist for more than 25 years. He also learned to direct choirs and did both jobs at West Burlington Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church in Middletown. He enjoyed cooking and he and his wife sometimes spent vacations cooking for youth camps and retreats. He loved doing crafts, and helped his wife with her wedding cake business. They took square dancing lessons, where they made several lifelong friends. Survivors include one daughter, Judy Jackson of Burlington; one son, Clark Holmberg of Winter Haven, Fla.; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one son and one granddaughter. Mr. Holmberg's body has been cremated. A memorial service will be announced at a later date with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery
