Verda Mae Asbury, 85, of Washington, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Washington County Hospital. Born September 8, 1924, in Clarence, MO, she was the daughter of Otis Elmore and Edith Hope Purdy Mapes. On September 28, 1945, she married Rayburn Lucas Asbury in Nashua. He died in 2001. Mrs. Asbury worked as Secretary of Personnel at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. She assisted her husband, with the Asbury-Smith Auction Service as bookkeeper and appraiser. She graduated from Burlington High School, and attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill. She lived most of her life in Burlington and West Burlington, but also lived in New London, Ottumwa, Kalona and in Washington for the past two and a half years. She attended United Methodist Church in Washington. She was a member of the Red Hat Society for many years. She was caregiver for her husband for nearly 20 years. She enjoyed collecting carnival glass and quilting. Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Patrick of Topeka, Kan.; one son, Monte Asbury of Washington; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special friend T. J. Berdo of Washington. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one infant sister. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Asbury will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones Eden Funeral Home, with the Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Pleasantview Home n Kalona.
