Mr. Robert W. Armstrong, 89, of Burlington died at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at Blair House in Burlington.
Born February 22, 1924 in Melrose Park, Illinois, he was the son of Herbert Wayne and Alma Emma (Kurtz) Armstrong. On August 20, 1949 he married Janet A. Mills in Rock Island, Illinois.
Mr. Armstrong was a Rock Island High School graduate and received his degree in engineering at Iowa State University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was quality control engineer for Sylvania until its closing and then was an engineer at Tri-City Heat and Treat in Rock Island, Illinois. Mr. Armstrong was a member of First United Methodist Church. He loved to play golf, was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to Jack Buck and the Cardinals. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Janet Armstrong of Burlington; three sons, David Armstrong of Murphysboro, Illinois and Steven Armstrong and Bruce Armstrong both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one brother, William Armstrong of Rock Island, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Armstrong and one great grandchild. The memorial funeral service for Mr. Armstrong will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 10th, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church. Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
