Thomas Oliver Hines, 73, of Burlington, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at his home. Born Dec. 12, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of William and Irma Bershee Hines. He married Shirley Fulton on Oct. 1,1947, in Burlington. Mr. Hines was a lifelong resident of Burlington. He retired after 39 years as the manager and secretary-treasurer of Wholesale Distributors. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served for 35 years as Sunday School teacher, deacon and chairman of the board. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as a Boy Scout leader and volunteer coordinator for the Department of Human Services. He loved his farm and volunteer work. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Cathy Watson, Tamara Behne and Megan Hines, all of Burlington; one brother, Tim Hines of Bloomington, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter, two brothers and an infant grandson. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Eicher-Sheagren Funeral Home. The funeral for Mr. Hines will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. David Nash officiating. The body will be cremated after the funeral. No formal committal services are planned at this time. Memorials have been established for the Special Needs Foundation, Southeast Iowa Community Action and the First Christian Church Social Action Committee.
