James Lee Higgs, 69, of Burlington, died at 3:37 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born July 23, 1940, in Owensboro, KY, he was the son of James Alex and Pearl A. Arnold Vaughn Higgs. On December 4, 1981, he married Barbara L. Schulte in Burlington. Mr. Higgs worked 23 years for U.S. Gypsum in Sperry, retired and worked at Catfish Bend Casino. He enjoyed cats, gardening, feeding birds, the outdoors, and trips to the casino. Survivors include his wife; six sons, Randy Higgs and Mark Kaltefleiter, both of Des Moines, Mike Higgs and Bobby Higgs, both of Arkansas, Patrick Kaltefleiter of Burlington, and Michael Schulte of Blue Grass; three daughters, Beth Wilson, Lisa Hand, and Margie Neff, all of Burlington; 14 grandchildren, who made her home with Jim and Barbara; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Higgs of Big Rock, Tenn.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Higgs will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
