Floyd "Pete" Hester, 94, of Burlington, died at 2:15 am Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 6, 1918, in Ottumwa, IA, he was the son of Charles and Gladys Branch Hester. On August 22, 1942, he married Betty Thompson in Kahoka, MO. She died August 7, 1980. Pete had worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the World War II in the European Theatre. He was an avid junker and picker. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, canning, and especially spending time with his family. Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia Mahan of Burlington; one granddaughter, Brenda Lemme of Ottumwa; two grandsons, Todd Mahan and Troy Mahan, both of Burlington; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Whalen of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, and one grandson, Brian Lemme. Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, July 13, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Hester will be 10:00 AM Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established.
