Obituary

Lonnie D. Gillis, 52, of Fort Madison, died at 8:21 am Sunday, November 11, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Born August 1, 1960, in Mediapolis, IA, he was the son of George Wendell and Marquita Marcia Green Gillis. Lonnie worked in the shipping department at Pinnacle Foods. He was a 1978 graduate of Mediapolis High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of the Moose, the Eagles, and Local #617 of Fort Madison where he was Union Steward for several years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, riding his Harley with his friends, shooting, and riding all terrain vehicles. He loved being with his family, the outdoors and his dog, Sophie. Survivors include two sons, Lyle D. Gillis of Burlington, and Lionel E. Gillis of Pekin, IL; one daughter, Tiffany L. Mitchell of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Clayton M. Norton, Riley W. Gillis, Cameron M. Mitchell, Anabella N. Gillis, and Jaron D. Garmoe; his father, George Gillis of West Point, IA, his mother, Marquita Palar of Burlington; two brothers, Chuck W. Gillis and Rick D. (Lynnette) Gillis, both of Burlington; three sisters, Catherine J. (Scott) Brown of Burlington, Lori A. (Terry) Petermen of Douglas, WY, Estella (Abel) Richie of Dayton, OH; several nieces and nephews; and his fiancé, Shayla S. White of Fort Madison. He was preceded in death by two nephews, Tharon Charles Gillis and Anthony George Gallegos, his step-mother, Vickie Gillis, and one sister-in-law, Linda L. Gillis. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Gillis will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 16, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for his grandchildren's education.
