Obituary
Shirley A. Hemann, 87, of Dubuque, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at Manor Care Health Services. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road. She was born on September 5, 1918, in Stockport, Iowa, daughter of Walker and Neva (Biedman) Johnston. She married Frederick J. Hemann on July 31, 1940, in Fairfield, Iowa; he preceded her in death on May 21, 1990. Mrs. Hemann worked as a registered nurse at The Finley Hospital, retiring in 1981. Shirley enjoyed sewing in her younger years. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and playing bridge. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, the Eastern Star and TTT. Surviving are her children, John (Laura) Hemann, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Karen Hemann, of Coralville, Iowa, and Ann (Terry) Novotny, of Walker, Iowa; five grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan and Kristin Novotny and Benjamin and Spencer Hemann; a sister, Margery Standley, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a niece, Shelley Bridge, of Denver Colo. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Lynne Novotny. A Shirley Hemann Memorial Fund has been established.
