Obituary
George Kenneth Helt, 92, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of New London, died Friday, February 12, 2010, at his home. Born March 21, 1917, on the family farm in Des Moines County, he was the son of William and Bertha Miller Helt. On January 28, 1953, he married Fern Oetken in Burlington. Mr. Helt farmed with his father, and worked at the Iowa Ammunition Plant for two years during World War II. He had a photography business and took pictures of class reunions, families, and high school seniors. He took photographs of 900 weddings, and printed black-and-white photos for VanSyoc Auction and Realty. He attended Winnebago Country School and graduated from Burlington High School in 1936. He was a member of New London United Methodist Church, and former member of Beulah Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant and the rural Ashbury Methodist Church. He moved to Mount Pleasant in 2005. He was a former member of Farm Bureau, the New London Co-op, Shutterbug Camera Club, and ARC of Henry County. He enjoyed traveling, taking pictures, and making and flying model airplanes. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Marjorie Helt of Mount Pleasant; one son, Kenneth Helt of Mount Pleasant; one granddaughter; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral for Mr. Helt will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. John Helt officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, with the procession to the cemetery leaving at 1:30 p.m. Memorials have been established for New London United Methodist Church, Hospice of Central Iowa, and Hope Haven in Burlington.
