Obituary
Mr. H. M. "Mike" Hellenthal, 99, of Fort Madison, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011, at Montrose Health Center. Born May 17, 1911, in Burlington, he was the son of Frank William and Clara Louise Walker Hellenthal. On October 4, 1935, he married Marian Grant in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2001. Mr. Hellenthal was a 1929 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in Burma and China at the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Hellenthal owned and operated "Mike's Place" in Fort Madison for 36 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fort Madison and Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington. Church and religion were important to him. Mr. Hellenthal started as a caddy at the Burlington Country Club at the age of eight. At age 10 he began delivering The Hawk Eye and continued to do so through high school. He enjoyed golfing his whole life. He also was a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan, and enjoyed walking, jogging, gardening, and being outdoors. He dearly loved his family. Survivors include two sons, Michael Hellenthal of Marion, North Carolina, and Monte (Alice) Hellenthal of Fort Madison; two daughters, Mary Louise (Tom) Schneider of Burlington, and Marsha (Gary) Ramaker of Keokuk; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; infant twins, David and Sandra Hellenthal; infant granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Hellenthal; one sister, Evalyn Engstrom; and three brothers, Orval Hellenthal, Roy Hellenthal, and Frank Hellenthal. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 22nd, in Lunning Chapel. The funeral service for Mr. Hellenthal will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 23rd, in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Erick Swanson officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Memorials have been established for St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fort Madison and Holy Trinity Athletics.
