Albert Frederic Heckenberg, 84, of New London, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on Thursday evening, June 6, 2013.
Born on November 24, 1928 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Albert Fredrick and Madeline Cline Heckenberg. He married Shirley Jean Lucas on September 13, 1950 in Monmouth, Illinois. She died on June 4, 1993.
Albert served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean conflict. He worked with many local contractors over the years as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from Bob Gabeline Farms as an operator at the age of 75. He enjoyed cutting and splitting wood, mushroom hunting and growing tomatoes in his garden. He loved the outdoors and fishing. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald Heckenberg of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and David (Karen) Heckenberg of Beaverdale, Iowa; three grandchildren, Iowa, and Kisha (Travis) Manning of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Travis Heckenberg of Burlington, Iowa and Tracy Hotop of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Heckenberg of Burlington, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and one sister.
No formal services are planned, cremation has been accorded. Interment of ashes will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa at a later date.
