Obituary
Richard “Rick” Wesley Schaefer Jr., 65, died at his home in Burlington, Iowa, Saturday, February 9, 2013. He was born June 9, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Richard Wesley and Shirley Lou Clark Schaefer. On January 2, 1993 he married Carolyn Sue Van Zetten in Burlington.
Rick was Vice President of Purchasing for LaMont from 1972 to 1995. Rick’s love of nature is evident in his service to the Greater Blue Heron Wildlife Refuge where he was Director of Land Management and a lifetime member. He was also a member of the Crystal Lake Hunting Club, Ducks Unlimited, a lifelong bird watcher and wild life photographer, hunter and fisherman. Rick was also an avid tennis and golfer and won the father/son City Golf Tournament. Rick was of the Methodist faith.
Rick is survived by his wife Carolyn Sue; one sister, Cynthia S. (Daryl) Brown of Burlington; sister in law, Marilyn (David) Phillips of Oskaloosa, Iowa; brother in law, Wayne (Gloria) Van Zetten of Colbert, OK; brother in law, Gary Van Zetten of Oskaloosa, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Matthew (Sarah) McKee, John Phillips, Cindy (Travis) Abrahamson, Holland (Eric) Taylor, Joshua Van Zetten, Sean Van Zetten; eight great-nephews and three great-nieces; special cousins, John, Jim and Tom Clark and Dan Hawkins and their families.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, his beloved dog, Sunny Boy and cat, Cleo.
Following cremation memorial services will be held in Prugh’s Chapel, Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Chaplain Dean Graber will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Prugh’s Chapel Tuesday evening February 12 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
