Obituary
Richard (Dick) Wesley Schaefer, Sr., 86, of Burlington, died at 8:46 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Great River Medical Center ER, West Burlington, Iowa. Born February 10, 1924, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of William A. and Naomi S. Schaefer. On August 4, 1946, he married Shirley Lou Clark in Burlington Iowa, at the First United Methodist Church. She died on July 26, 2007. Dick was a B.H.S. graduate. He then graduated from Burlington Community College in 1942, and Iowa Wesleyan College in1949, Magna Cum Laude. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He played semi-professional baseball and signed a pro contract with the Boston Braves. His career was interrupted due to a broken ankle. He was a bank examiner for Henry County Savings Bank in Mount Pleasant. He was a Senior Bank Examiner for Iowa State Dept. of Banking. He was Office Manager for Al Zupek at Bonewitz Lab, and he retired from Conifer Corporation. He enjoyed reading, golf, hunting, and his family. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 70 years. Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia (Daryl) Brown of Burlington; one son, Richard (Carolyn) Schaefer, Jr. of Burlington; one grandson, Matthew (Sarah) McKee of Burlington; one great-grand-daughter, Margaret McKee of Burlington; and one nephew, Dan (Leslie) Hawkins of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his wife and one sister, Martha Hawkins (2003). Memorial services for Richard W. Schaefer, Sr. will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Prugh's Chapel. Rev. Mike Orthel will officiate. Private interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials have been established for King's Daughters & Sons Home and Great River Hospice House.
