Richard "Dick" Duane Hassman, 84, of Burlington, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington under the care of Great River Hospice with his family at his bedside. He was born March 2, 1930 in Albia, Iowa, the son of Emil and Golda Hassman. He attended Albia High School and served in the Navy for four years. Richard married Irene Meyers on October 21, 1950. They had two children, Kathy (Dan) Williams of Burlington, and Stephen (Becky) Hassman of Primrose. Irene is deceased. Richard married Ruth Boyle on July 21, 1973. He then became a father to Robert Boyle of Burlington, Dena (Randy) McCulloch of Gladstone, and Tina (Lawrence) Ahrens of Lincoln, NE. Richard is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, and two sisters. Along with his wife, Ruth, he owned and operated Hassman Services/C-Cat, Inc. for over fifty years. Prior to that, he worked as an electrician for Burlington Northern Railroad and was a supervisor at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. He enjoyed his work and associating with his customers. He also enjoyed vacationing in Florida, running on the beach, swimming, reading, and riding his bicycle. Richard loved his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren have many fond memories of outlandish stories accompanied by fun adventures. As per his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory. The community is invited to a Celebration of Life Open House from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie # 150. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Klein Center, Great River Hospice, and the Parkinson's Foundation.
