Obituary
Cleo Louise Hassell, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.
Born December 19th, 1924, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edwin and Helen E. Archer-Rienecke. On November 10th, 1943 she married Richard (Dick) Hassell of Burlington. He preceded her in death May 12th, 2001. Also preceding her in death is her sister Wilma Wiegard, brother-in-law Carl Wiegard (both of Burlington), and sister-in-law Helen Rienecke of Arvada Colorado.
Mrs. Hassell was a graduate of Burlington Senior High School, after high school she worked for Dr. Eggleton, and was the Secretary/Treasurer for Productions Incorporated. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker and volunteer for many charities and organizations.
She was a 50 year member of Kings Daughters (Norma Circle). She was a member, past President, and held other offices of P.E.O. Chapter NH.
Other volunteer activity included: Girl Scout Leader, was an officer in the PTA, board member for The United Way, Pageant board member for Burlington's Bicentennial, and was a past President for the Burlington chapter of Southeast Iowa Symphony.
In addition to Mrs. Hassell's civic activities; throughout her life she was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she taught 4th grade Sunday school (for twenty years), served as a Circle Leader of "Ruth Circle," and served as President of WSCS and a District officer for the Muscatine District. She accepted Jesus Christ as her "Savior" during her confirmation at Grace Church.
From of her love of music, she was also a faithful choir member of First United Methodist Church, where she and her husband served as Communion Stewards. She was a current member of Zion United Church of Christ.
She enjoyed playing bridge, loved music, dancing, was a constant reader, enjoyed traveling, and was always baking pies for others.
She is fondly remembered by family and friends for her compassion of, and service to so many people.
Mrs. Hassell is survived by her daughter, Karen Hassell of Mt. Pleasant; her son, Dennis and her daughter-in-law Diane of Dallas, Texas; one granddaughter, Kimberly Penz and her husband Bill Penz of McKinney, Texas; one sister, Vera and her husband Floyd Krieger of Burlington; one brother, Edwin Rienecke of Arvada Colorado; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at the Zion United Church of Christ 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14th, with the Rev. Jane Willan officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.
