Obituary
Jonan Haskell, 87, of Burlington, died at 6:30 a.m. Friday Dec. 22, 2000, at her home. Born Aug. 26, 1913, in Excelsior Springs, MO, she was the daughter of William Joseph and Martha Vivian Haskell. Miss Haskell retired as a professor at Southeastern Community College in 1983. She taught world civilization, sociology and social problems, national, state and local government, anthropology, contemporary world, international economics, fundamentals of speech, public speaking and marriage and the family. She received her bachelor's degree from Missouri State Teachers College at Maryville, and her master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She continued with post-graduate study and accumulated more than 150 hours toward an advanced degree. At the time of her retirement, she was granted the professor emeritus status by the college. That year she was chosen Outstanding Woman of Burlington and was the first woman to give the SCC commencement address. She served as historian on the Burlington Commission for Historical Preservation, was a committee member for Burlington's Welcome Center and served on the Human Rights Commission. She was a longtime board member and officer of the Burlington League of Women Voters, past president of Burlington Education Association and Des Moines County Retired Teachers Association, and was an activist in Des Moines County Democrats. She was chosen to the county's Democraatic Party Hall of Fame for leadership, including many years as the convention parliamentarian. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She authored the book, "Our Park at the Top of a Hill," brochures and other manuscripts relating to historic sites, brochures, guides and other documents for the Human Rights Commission, League of Women Voters and educational organizations, and wrote extensively on the Burlington railroad, James Grimes and immigration west through Burlington. She traveled in 85 countries and visited every state in the United States. She enjoyed her home and her flower gardens. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The funeral for Miss Haskell will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Tyrone Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Jonan Haskell Scholarship Fund.
