Howard Edward Harris, 78, of Sperry, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born January 19, 1930, in Brighton, he was the son of Arthur and Leona Campbell Harris. On December 5, 1959, he married Ellen Roberta Jones in Monmouth, Ill. Mr. Harris was a truck driver and drove for Winegard Co. for 26 years. He served in the Air Force. He was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed jokes, auctions, camping, collecting guns and John Wayne movies and memorabilia. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gene Mairet of Batavia and Howard R. Harris of Camden, N.C.; six daughters, Dorothy Harris Carrothers of Ottumwa, Debbie Hofmann Barbeln of Isanti, Minn., Brenda Harris Regan of Ottumwa, Lyndell Wilson of West Burlington, Celesta Harris Brendel of Riverside and Lori Harris Hicks of Macomb, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his stepmother, Catherine "Mort" Harris of Washington; four sisters, Cathy Thu of New London, Wilma Chalupa of Ainsworth, Darlene Stewart of Phoenix, Ariz., and Linda Hagans of Brighton; and two brothers, Archie Harris of Davenport and Roy Dusenberry of Houston, MO. He was preceded in death by one daughter, his parents; three brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Harris will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Betty Anna Bremmer officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
