Mrs. Phyllis J. Harper Hobby, 86, of Burlington died at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012, at Bickford Cottage. Born January 3, 1926 in Burlington, she was the daughter of George H. and Bertha L. Schmicker Martin. On July 17, 1948 she married Jack D. Harper in Burlington. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1983. On December 7, 1996 she married Lewis B. Hobby at St. Luke's United Church of Christ. Mrs. Hobby was a 1943 graduate of St. Paul's High School in Burlington. She worked in the office at J.I. Case Co. from 1950-1959, was a clerk in the Des Moines County Auditor's Office for ten years, and also worked in the office at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Hobby was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ and its Ruth Circle, Good Samaritan and Women's Fellowship where she served as secretary and treasurer and the Moose Lodge Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Lewis Hobby of Burlington; one granddaughter, Jackie Zwiefel of Iowa City; three step grandchildren; step children, Theda Olson of Carman, Illinois and Debbie Thye of Burlington; special friend, Linda Hale and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband; one son, Alan D. Harper; daughter-in-law, Mary B. Harper; brother, Clifford C. Martin and sister, Eleanor Clark. The funeral service for Mrs. Harper Hobby will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12th, in St. Luke's United Church of Christ, 1403 South St. The Rev. Mark Schowalter will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service. A luncheon will follow the committal service at the church.
A memorial has been established for St. Luke's United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Harper Hobby has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel's care.
