Mr. Donald Edward Gulick, 83, of Burlington went home to be with the Lord at 12:43 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2014, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born September 27, 1930 in Burlington, he was the son of Milo Marion and Snowda Mae (Bence) Gulick. On December 10, 1955 he married Joan Ruth Stucker in Kirkwood, Illinois.
Mr. Gulick attended Oak Street Schools and graduated from Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Illinois. He was a veteran serving from 1947 - 1950 in the Navy and then during the Korean Conflict serving in the Air Force from 1950 - 1953.
Mr. Gulick first worked for over 20 years at Ewinger Supply in purchasing and bookkeeping. He then worked for nine years as a transport officer for the Des Moines County Sheriff's Office, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church where he also served as a past deacon. He was also a member of the Elks, Eagles, VFW, Moose and American Legion Lodges, and the 40 & 8 Club. He was a past member of the board of directors for the Burlington Bees and was a die-hard Cubs and Bears fan. He enjoyed boating, camping, woodworking, bowling and being with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joan Gulick of Burlington; two sons, Richard (Diane) Gulick of Des Moines and Michael (Brenda) Gulick of Fort Madison; three daughters, Mary Jo (Gene) Rawls of Des Moines, Vicky (Di) Hollenbeck of Everett, Washington and Michelle (Steve) Dickey of Wapello; 11 grandchildren, Brad (Kylie) Gulick, Lindsey (Dustin) Siegle, Amanda Carter, Alyssa Lindo, Allison Rawls, Austin Wallingford, Eric (Carissa) Beer, Marcus (Jenna) Beer, Alicia Petry, Darcy Petry and Brady Petry; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters, Marcia (Jesse) Avery of Kirkwood, Illinois and Gloria Barr of Macomb, Illinois; one brother, Daniel (Gladys) Gulick of Kirkwood; two step brothers, Tom (Charlotte) Coursey and Richard Wayne Coursey both of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eva and four brothers, Howard, Dale, June and Jack.
Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Friday, September 26th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. Gulick will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 27th, at Oak Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Karas officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
