Charles H. "Chick" Groeltz, 92, of 1147 Woodbine Circle, Galesburg, died at 9:14 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, in Galesburg Cottage Hospital. He was born November 3, 1916, in Burlington, IA, the son of Charles H. and Else Gaarde Groeltz. He married Alvina M. Dickman of Riverside, IL, on September 28, 1940. He is survived by his wife Alvina; two daughters, Sandra Groeltz of Elkhart, IN, and June (James) Isch of Carmel, IN; three grandchildren, Erinn Groeltz, Melinda (Jon) Dietrich, and Eric (Michelle) Isch; and three great-grandchildren, Eliana, Nathaniel and Ryan Dietrich. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Bill Groeltz. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945 during World War II, seeing action in Iwo Jima. He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years in several capacities, lastly working as a freight agent in Galesburg. He retired in 1979. He has lived in Galesburg since 1972. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1934, and attended Burlington Junior College. He was a member of First Lutheran Church. He was a past member of the Galesburg Lions Club, and a member of the Railroad Prairie Hub Club. He was a volunteer for the Alternatives for Older Adults. He had a great passion for the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, golfing, and gardening. Charles was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2009, at First Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2009, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, IA, with Military Rites by the Burlington Area Veteran Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church.
