Robert Edward Grant, 86, of Burlington, died at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Great River Medical Center Klein Unit in Burlington. Born October 7, 1921, in Centerville, he was the son of Raymond and Ethel Swanson Grant. On July 7, 1973, he married Dorothy Murguia in Burlington. Mr. Grant was a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College. He completed his degree in Commerce at University of Iowa in 1946. He taught business subjects in Oakville for one year and taught in Fort Madison for five years. He completed his master's degree in counseling at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. He was a counselor and taught typing and history at Horace Mann Junior High beginning in 1960. He was a counselor at Burlington High School from 1966 to 1983. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Eagles. He enjoyed gardening, reading, fishing and studying the Civil War. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Nancy Jacobs and Judy Kaltefleiter, both of Burlington, and Connie Stephens of Westerville, Ohio; one stepson, Terry Collins of Ventura, Calif.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia Gahn of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kay Williams of Lincoln, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Grant will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Don Hoornstra officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Klein Center Alzheimer's Unit and Messiah Lutheran Church.
