Donald William Gosling, 88, of Burlington, died Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at his daughter's home in Smithville, Tenn. Born October 26, 1921, in Pontnewydd, Wales, U.K., he was the son of William Henry and Elsie Steer Gosling. On June 13, 1942, he married Joan Iris Bailey in Teignmouth, England. She died July 10, 2009. Mr. Gosling worked as an appliance repairman for Wahl Bros., and maintenance engineer at St. Francis Hospital and Nursing Home in Burlington. He graduated from Highweek Senior School in 1935. He served two years in the Royal Airforce Rafur on a coastal command squadron in the English Channel during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a 50-year Mason, member of Des Moines Lodge 1, a member of Square-N-Aders Square Dancing Club, and a Hawkeyes fan. He enjoyed photography, computers, and making stained glass. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Horn of Smithville, Tenn.; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where the family will receive friends. The funeral with Masonic Rites for Mr. Gosling will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Steamboat Senior Center in Burlington.
