Ray Burton Edward “Skip” Hollenbeck, 60, of Burlington, died at Great River Medical Center, on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 8:42 p.m.
Born on May 23, 1950 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Ray Vernon and Peggy Marie Logsdon Hollenbeck.
Ray was a graduate of Long Beach City College and California State University with degrees in history and archeology. Ray moved to California in 1951. He was a member of the Long Beach Historical Society and fought to preserve Long Beach history. He was also a member of the California Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors and Inland Society of Tax Consultants. He was included in the Century 21’s 1987 “Best of the Best”. He was Director of R.E.O. Investments Division of Century 21 “Van Lizzen”. He was in the Million Dollar Club of Century 21. He volunteered at the Calico Early Man dig site in Yermo, California. He worked as “Docent” for the Rancho Las Ceintos Historical Dwelling. He was director of recruiting & sales training for Century 21. He taught real estate investment and taxation classes. He was an H & R Block office manager. He also was an enrolled agent and taught taxation classes for H & R Block. He returned to Burlington in 2003 and worked for Lowes for six years. He wrote articles for various historical magazines and his hobbies included traveling, photography, surfing, sailing and sky diving. He was of the Lutheran faith.
He is survived by one son, Ray Eben (Cassie) Hollenbeck of Cerritos, California; one daughter, Wendy Marie Avis of Anaheim, California; four grandchildren, Madison, Ashley & Caden Hollenbeck and Kaylee; one sister, Sharon Poggemiller of Burlington, Iowa; one nephew, Scott Trumbo of Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Helen Beatty and an infant granddaughter, Jasmine.
The family of Ray Burton Edward “Skip” Hollenbeck will receive friends on Tuesday evening, February 8, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. Following visitation, cremation will be accorded. Interment will take place at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa at a later date.
A memorial has been established in memory of Ray Hollenbeck.
