Obituary
H. Sanford Anderson, 95, of Burlington, died at 6:43 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center. Norn Feb. 19, 1910, in Johnson City, Tenn., he was the son of Isaac Smith and Iris S. Campbell Anderson. On July 13, 1940, he married Pauline E. Whicher in Burlington. They later divorced.
Mr. Anderson started out as a callboy for the CB&Q Railroad at the age of 16. He worked at the Burlington Post Office from 1937 until 1946. From 1943 until his retirment in1968 he worked as a railway postal clerk in Chicago, Sioux City and Des Moines.
He was a graduate of St. Paul High School and Burlington Junior College. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 579, Fraternal Order of Eagles Burlington Aerie No. 150, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He loved walking, dancing, reading and gardening. He was especially proud of his tomoaoes.
Survivors included one son, Kermit Anderson of West Des Moines; one daughter, Nancy Fischer of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; his special companion Alfrieda Carter of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with family meeting friends from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral. The funeral for Mr. Anderson will be at 1 p.m. Wedneday in the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Frank R. Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Senior Center and the Crapo Park Foundation.
