Joan Elaine Gerling, 72, of Burlington, died Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
Born February 28, 1944, in LaHarpe, Illinois, she was the daughter of Cleo Benjamin and Edith Marcella (Miller) Dowell. She married Gerald Gerling on April 5, 1986.
Joan was a homemaker, a computer programmer and a pixie photographer for J.C. Penney. She was a member of First Assembly of God. She loved her family and her dog Onix, sewing, reading her Bible, watching Wheel of Fortune and talking on the phone to relatives.
She is survived by her mother, Edith Dowell of Lomax; her husband, Gerald Gerling of Burlington; one daughter, Marchele Elaine (Gerry) Jenkins of Frankfort, Kentucky; one step daughter, Gayle (Gary) Binder of Burlington; one step son, Glenn (Kim) Gerling of Fort Madison; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; seven siblings, Theresa Snowden of Burlington, Roger Dowell of Lomax, Tanya (Ed) Chewning of Kirkwood, Illinois, Marsha Dowell Trout of Stronghurst, Benny Dowell of Burlington, Dawn Dowell (Darran) Reverend of Burlington and Tommy Dowell of Burlington; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Richard "RD" Dowell and Randy Dowell.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gerling will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 1st at First Assembly of God. Pastors Scott Collier and Don Crawford will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31st at First Assembly of God where the family will receive friends.
Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service and has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the Children Ministries at First Assembly of God.
