Obituary
Daniel Gerdes, 82, of Burlington, died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2007, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Jan. 8, 1925, in Colesburg, he and his twin brother were adopted by Arthur and Florence Shively Gerdes. On July 23, 1950, he married Dorothy Oetken in Burlington. He joined the Burlington Police Department in January 1952 and retired as lieutenant in April 1980. He then worked 10 years in maintenance for McDonald's restaurants. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a water tender 3rd class. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, Iowa State Police Association Black Hawk Local Unit No. 3 and Chiefs of Police Association. He volunteered at Klein Care Center for 10 years, singing in a quartet. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Elaine Camcross of West Chicago; three sons, LaVerne Gerdes, Wayne Gerdes and Steven Gerdes, all of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother and one infant son. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Gerdes will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Jim Ruberg officiating. The Burlington Police Department Honor Guard will be present. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mediapolis and Southeast Iowa Area Parkinson Support Group.
