Mrs. Dorothy L. Gerdes, 91, of Burlington died at 3:03 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Great River Hospice House.
Born March 11, 1923 in Muscatine County, she was the daughter of Edward D. and Mary A. Bartusch Oetken. On July 23, 1950 she married Daniel Gerdes in Oak Street Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on March 11, 2007.
Dorothy was a homemaker and also worked in food service at North Hill School for 18 years and B.G.'s Buy and Bye for 11 years. She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church where she served many years as trustee, and The Burlington Police Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, putting together jigsaw puzzles and her grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Carncross of West Chicago, IL; three sons, LaVerne, Wayne, and Steve Gerdes all of Burlington; and one brother, Richard Oetken of Burlington.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son in infancy, and one sister.
The funeral service for Gerdes will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21st at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Jim Ruberg will be officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Tuesday, January 20th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Memorials have been established for Oak Street Baptist Church and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
