Rev. Laurence Linebaugh Garrett, 82, of Burlington, Iowa, died at his home on Sunday, July 21, 2013
Rev. Garrett was born on February 1, 1931 in Clarinda, Iowa at the Shady Brook Farm near Braddyville, Iowa. He was the son of Max Martin and Eva Alice Linebaugh Garrett. He married Claris Fern (Jamie) Jamison on August 14, 1958 in Villisca, Iowa. She died January 3, 2000.
He graduated from Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa and the Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Serving the Iowa Annual Conference from 1957 until his retirement in 1994, he was the pastor at the Grace United Methodist Church from 1973 until 1980.
He worked with the boy scouts and enjoyed riding his bike, being in the outdoors, doing yard work, participating in church activities and talking to people. He enjoyed his mission trips to Mexico. Service to the people was his life.
He is survived by three sons, Joel Garrett and Alan Garrett both of Burlington and Tobin (Melissa) Garrett of Ottumwa, Iowa; one brother, Max (Joyce) Garrett of Eugene, Oregon; two sisters, Patty Hanson of Braddyville and Jean (Dr. Fred) Graham of East Lansing, Michigan; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three step-great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one step-grandson.
Funeral service for Rev. Laurence Garrett will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Trevor Davis will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Mike Orthel will officiate.
The family will receive friends in Prugh’s Chapel on Friday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. A memorial has been established for the Grace United Methodist Church.
