Judy K. Gapen, 70, of Burlington, died at 10:00 AM Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at her home.
Born August 7, 1944, in Peoria, IL, she was the daughter of Ralph Paul and Ruby Amelia Gulick Mercer. On July 1, 1981, she married Cliff Gapen in Burlington. He died January 23, 1986. She had a companion Dickie Lee Toops for 20 years. He died May 11, 2007.
Judy worked for Aldi Bakery for 14 years.
She was a 1962 graduate of Mediapolis High School, where she played basketball. She was a team member of four of the ten consecutive Bullettes state basketball tournament trips.
She enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, the Mississippi River, fish fry's, mushroom hunting, and loved flowers. She learned to bow hunt in her late 60's. She enjoyed her dogs, Skeeter and then Peanut.
Survivors include one brother, Ralph P. (Bev) Mercer, III of Oakville; three nephews Jeff Mercer of Burlington, Todd (Stephanie) Mercer of Berwick, LA, and Troy (Shana) Mercer of Buna, TX; one niece, Pam (Donnie) Steward of Sperry; and several great nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, and her companion, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gapen will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
