Raymond John Gallagher, 69, of Burlington, died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at his home. Born Nov. 10, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Raymond Charles and Frances E. Leffler Gallagher. On Oct. 13, 1956, he married Jeanette "Jenny" Schmidt in Burlington. Mr. Gallagher worked as a machine operator for Georgia Pacific for 20 years, and retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant after eight years as a production operator and inspector. He attended St. Mary's and St. Paul's schools. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran, serving from 1952 to 1956 in the Far Eastern Command, and in Korea for two years. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of American Legion Post 0729, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9162, National Rifle Association, Des Moines County Conservation and Des Moines County Humane Society, where he was a former board member. He was a former motorcycle and ATV safety instructor, a former Western Little League assistant, and a Boy Scout and Cub Scout assistant leader. He loved outdoor activities, photography and family. Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Gallagher of Burlington; two granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; one step-great-grandson; and two sisters, Mary Snowden and Patricia "Pat" Watts, both of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Gallagher will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
