Eileen Louise Freers passed away January 9, 2010, at the Northcrest Health Care Center in Ames, Iowa, Eileen was born April 9, 1916, in Marshall County, Iowa, to M. V. Nelson and Rosella Helin Nelson. Mrs. Freers was a graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School in Marshalltown, IA. After graduation she was employed as a dental assistant to Dr. M. G. Knodle for 10 years. She married Richard S. Freers April 15, 1941, in Marshalltown, IA. She was employed as a dental assistant at Station Hospital Camp Butner, where her husband was preparing for deployment to Europe during WW II. Upon her husband's return from Germany, they lived in Marshalltown, and moved to Burlington, IA in 1948. Eileen was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Burlington, where she was actively involved in the Altar & Rosary Society, Church Circle, and the Church Renovation Committee. She also served 15 years as a member of the Interfaith Council. Mrs. Freers served as President and Treasurer of the St. Paul's Home & School Association, as well as vice-chair of the Davenport Diocese Home & School Association. She was active in Cub Scouts for St. Paul's and initiated the organization of a volunteer service to staff the St. Paul's School business office. Mrs. Freers was a member and past president of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Treasurer for the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop, Chair for the Mercy Hospital Art Show, Tour of Homes, and the Holiday Market. She served as Chair for the combined membership drive of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and Burlington Hospital. She was a member of the Great River Medical Center Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant. Mrs. Freers was an energetic member of the community, and volunteered numerous hours supporting local and national non-profit organizations including Easter Seal Society, Heart Association, March of Dimes, Community Chest Red Feather Campaign, Red Cross, Cancer, and Muscular Dystrophy Associations. Mrs. Freers had been employed as a processing specialist for the Liheap Program of Community Action of Southeast Iowa for 22 years. She retired in 2003 due to health problems. She enjoyed spending time with her family, antiquing, quilting, reading, refinishing furniture, and working in her yard. In 2006, Mrs. Freers moved to Ames, IA, making her home at the Northcrest Community. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Kay Freers Doyle (John); son, Stephen S. Freers (Lista); four grandchildren, John J. Doyle (Kristy), Katie Rose Youngberg (Kyle), LaRae and Emily Freers; six great-grandchildren, Dakota, Drew, Mackenzie and Rachael Doyle, and Logan and Asher Youngberg; brother-in-law, Donald Freers and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Richard. Memorials should be directed to the Easter Seal Society of Iowa or Notre Dame High School Foundation. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Monday, January 11th, in Lunning Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Freers will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 12th, in St. Paul's Catholic Church. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide the music. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
