Jerry La-Verne Franklin, 78, of Madison, Wis, formerly of West Burlington, died at 2 a.m. Friday, February 20, 2009, at Meriter Hospital in Madison. Born August 29, 1930, in West Burlington, he was the son of LaVerne Franklin and Gladys M. Waldmeier. Mr. Franklin was a coach, teacher, and counselor from 1952 to 1978 at the following schools: Calmar, Postville, Williamsburg, College Community School in Cedar Rapids, and United Township High School in East Moline, IL. He graduated from Burlington High School and earned a Bachelor's degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He received his Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Iowa. He was an all-state football player in high school. He had an undefeated football season the first year he coached at Calmar. He was the director of guidance for United Township High School. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Survivors include two grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Joan Franklin of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. Visitation with family will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Prugh Funeral Service. The graveside committal for Mr. Franklin will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Morris Hurd officiating.
