Mildred "Mid" L. Fleming, 82, of Burlington, died at 11:52 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Born Jan 4, 1918, in Rock Creek Township of Hancock County, Ill., she was the daughter of Emory and Willa Weidmeyer Mapes. On Oct. 24, 1935, she married Lester H. "Bud" Fleming in Keokuk. He died Jan. 24, 1987. Mrs. Fleming worked in inspection and shipping at Antennacraft Co. in West Burlington for 12 years before retiring. Before that she worked for 18 years at Ross Manufacturing. She was a graduate of Ferris High School in Ferris, Ill. She was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed her family, watching birds, and growing and taking care of flowers. Survivors include two sons, Phillip L. Fleming of Gladstone, Ill., and James A. Fleming of West Burlington; two daughters, Sharon K. Bessine of Burlington, and Janet Mumm of San Diego; 10 grand- children; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Vass of Ferris; and one brother, Robert Mapes of Disco, Ill. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one infant daughter, and one great-granddaughter. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Fleming will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel, with the Rev. David Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa for research of macular degeneration.
