Stanley H. Fisher, 88, of Burlington, died Thursday, November 26, 2009, after a heroic battle with cancer. Born March 27, 1921, in Burlington, he was the son of Harry and Catherine Brockelman Fisher. On February 20, 1946, he married Celine Powell in Burlington. Mr. Fisher was employed as a plumber's apprentice while working for his father, and eventually took over the plumbing business of Fisher Plumbing and Heating. Years later he went to work for Burlington School System. A graduate of Burlington High School, he served in the Armed Forces, initially in Reno, Nev., where he underwent training in chemical warfare. He subsequently was stationed in England during World War II with the task of loading bombs on B-17's. He was discharged on January 30, 1946. He was an avid hunter, boater, roller skater, and bowler. In 1988 he was inducted into the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. He loved to dance, and was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years. He traveled extensively with his longtime companion, Charlotte, to Alaska, Hawaii, Panama, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, and the United States. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Dvorsky of Rye, Colo., Pat Clawson of Genoa City, Neb., and Lynn Huss of Gladstone, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and special companion Charlotte Peterson. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Military rites will be conducted at 4 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Fisher will be 10 a.m. Monday at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. David Steinle officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
