Mary Ellen Eves, 59, of Burlington, died at her residence on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Born on July 9, 1952, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of John R. and Mary G. Johnson Siekert. She married Philip J. Eves on August 13, 1983, in Burlington, Iowa. Mary graduated from Burlington High School in 1969, and received a B.A. (1982) and M.S. (1984) from the University of Illinois in Urbana. Following graduation, Mary and Philip resided in Melbourne, Australia, where their two daughters were born. They relocated to Burlington, Iowa in 1998. Mary taught high school English and Spanish for 25 years, retiring in 2007. She designed and then managed the coffee shop at the Burlington Public Library for two years. She also spent much of her time helping Philip at Diggers Rest Coffeehouse in downtown Burlington. Mary was an active member of The Shakespeare Club, and The Burlington Book Club. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband, Philip; two daughters, Jane Eves and Catherine Eves, both of Burlington, Iowa; two brothers, Paul (Magda) Siekert of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and John Siekert of Eugene, Oregon; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dr. Peter (Ronda) Eves of Melbourne, Australia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Graveside Ash Committal Services for Mary will be held on Friday, July 15, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Jerry Rigdon will officiate. Friends are requested to meet at the Sunnyside entrance to Aspen Grove Cemetery Friday morning. No formal visitation is planned. As per her wishes, cremation has been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for The Shakespeare Club and The Burlington Book Club.
