Margaret Jane (Armstrong) Altenberger was born June 2, 1924, in Kirksville, Mo., and passed away April 22, 2013, in Orono. Her father was Frederick A. Armstrong and mother was Tina Catherine (Muder) Armstrong.
Margaret obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Truman University, Kirksville, Mo., in 1946, a Bachelor of Theology degree from Northwest Nazarene College, Nampa, Idaho, in 1949, and a Master of Arts degree in social work from University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, in 1959. She taught in secondary schools in Iowa and then practiced counseling for Community Health and Counseling Services, Bangor, for 27 years. Margaret married Russell A. Altenberger, then a graduate student in statistics, at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, in 1959. Russell took a position at University of Maine in mathematics in 1960 and the couple moved to Orono. She was a member of Association of Accredited Social Workers, president of Bangor-Brewer Christian Women’s Club for three years and president of Bangor-Brewer Couples Club for three years. She sponsored and guided Stonecroft Bible Studies for a number of years in Orono. She loved entertaining, enjoyed music groups and was involved with several Bangor and Orono churches. Margaret loved her Lord Jesus and all God’s creatures, especially the animals of his kingdom.
Margaret leaves behind a twin sister, Frances Ray of Galesburg, Ill.; brother, Roderick Armstrong of Burlington, Iowa; many nephews and nieces; and dear friends, Judy and Robert Tanguay of Brewer. Margaret was predeceased by Russell, Oct. 24, 2006; and brother, Richard Armstrong.
Friends are invited to a memorial service 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Dirigo Pines, Orono, led by the Rev. Richard Reynolds. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor; and Aspen Grove Cemetery Association, Burlington, Iowa, where burial will be with Margaret’s beloved Russell.
