Leroy Axel Engstrom, 22, seaman first class,former resident of Burlington, is missing in action, according to word to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Axel Engstrom, Clinton, from the navy department. LeRoy was born here. Later the family moved to West Liberty where the father was engaged in business and LeRoy was graduated from the West Liberty High school. LeRoy was employed a a city mail carrier prior to enlistment in the navy July 22, 1942. The elder Engstrom is now a machinist with the Northwestern railroad at Clinton. Leroy, a radio and signal man in the navy was anticipating leave in the near future and his last letter to his parents was received June 7. In the event he wouldn't obtain time enough off duty to make the trip home, his parents planned to spend the leave with him at whatever port he would be in. LeRoy enlisted in 1942. In addition to the parents there is one sister, Sharon, at home, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hellenthal. of Burlington are the maternal grandparents and there are two aunts Mrs. Wade Schlarbaum and Hildur Engstrom, here. Two uncles Ray and Frank Hellenthal, one in this country and one overseas, are in the service.
