James J. Eland, 48, of 1302 S. Leebrick, regional sales manager for Bonewitz Chemical Co. and former Hawk Eye sports editor, died of cancer Tuesday, June 16, at Burlington Medical Center. He was born May 3, 1933, at Burlington to John W. and Marguerite Dietlein Eland. He married Yvonne Casten at Burlington Dec. 11, 1959. Mr. Eland attended Burlington High School, Burlington Junior and Iowa Wesleyan colleges, and University of Iowa, He joined the Hawk Eye June 21, 1955, as assistant sports editor and served as sports editor from 1956 until 1970, when he assumed the position with Bonewitz Chemical Co. He was a past board member and executive director of the Burlington Bees baseball club, past director and secretary of the Burlington Officials Association, had managed a Babe Ruth League baseball team and was a member of Burlington Golf Club. Surviving: his wife; his mother, West Burlington; son Mike and Daughter Mollie, both of Burlington. Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Friday,. Prugh's Chapel, the Rev. Glenn R. Parrott; Aspen Grove Cemetery.
