William Frederick "Bill" Ebert, 94, of Burlington, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 23, 1916, in Burlington, he was the son of George and Lillian Ohl Ebert. On June 3, 1948, he married Caroline Ellen Taylor in Burlington. She died February 19, 2003. Mr. Ebert worked at the U.S. Post Office until retirement, leaving as an assistant to the postmaster. During his tenure he earned several Postal Service Awards. He had worked for Guthrie Johnson Construction Co., building the Iowa Ordnance Plant. He was a 1934 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a veteran of the Army, where he was in charge of a supply group for the frontlines, and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He supported the troops in Africa, spending one night with his team's vehicles hidden and parked behind sand dunes as Rommel's Panther division moved through. He supported troops in Italy, driving the mountain passes with supplies under bombing during Anzio, the Batle of Casino. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, and National Active and Retired Federal Employees. He did woodworking, raised a garden, baked, tinkered to repair anything broken, and always had time to have fun with family and friends. Survivors include one daughter, Joan Deutsch of Wilmington, Del.; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one son. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Prugh's Chapel. The funeral for Mr. Ebert will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Vicki Engelmann officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for St. Luke's United Church of Christ.
