Obituary
Donald (D.W.) Allgood, 82, of Burlington, died peacefully at 5:40 AM Friday, November 18, 2016, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington after eight years of progressive Lewy Body Dementia.
He was born on November 28, 1933, in New Sharon, IA. He was the son of Leonard Merle and Elba May Lunt Allgood. He married Marjorie Holdsworth on January 6, 1956 in Des Moines. They were married 20 years before Marge died of cancer. On November 14, 1976, he married Sandra Knight Kromer in Burlington.
Don graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1951 before attending Iowa State College. Don was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity, and in 1957, he graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).
After graduating, Don moved to Burlington and opened Allgood Veterinary Clinic. In 1976, Dr. Allgood moved the clinic, expanded its services and hired Dr. Rita Lesczynski. He practiced in the Burlington community for over fifty years with compassion, humility, and integrity. Don served a term as president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. In 1992, Iowa State University recognized Don with a Stange Alumni Award for distinguished service in veterinary medicine.
Don took great pride in his community and enjoyed serving in a number of roles. A longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder and, more recently, as a part-time staff member coordinating discipleship classes and visitation. Don enjoyed being part of Rotary where, for nearly sixty years, he weekly defended his beloved Cyclones. Don helped lead many successful community projects. He was the founding director of People Pet Partnership. He served the United Way as a campaign chairman, served on the Burlington Public Library task force and was a charter member and first president of the Burlington Education Foundation. Don was School Board President and a faithful board member of Burlington Bank and Trust.
His greatest legacy is a devotion to family and how he impacted their lives.
