Betty Jeanne Duncan, 83, of Burlington, died at 11:40 a.m. Friday, July 4, 2008, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born December 15, 1924, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Robert and Adalene Tracey Paxson. On March 9, 1945. she married Junior M. "Sparky" Duncan in Memphis, MO. He died October 30, 1996. Mrs. Duncan worked as a billing clerk, claim agent and secretary for Arledge Transfer for 20 years. She then worked as office manager for Casebine Credit Union until her retirement in 1980. She was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School and attended the College of Commerce in Burlington. After a winter in Texas, she and her husband settled in Grove, Okla., on a lakefront lot with their own year-round fishing dock. In June 1995, due to her husband's health, they moved to Anniston, Ala. She returned to Burlington in 1999. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Golden Oldies, Sweet Adalines, the Silver Singers and was a former member of the King's Daughters Sheldon No. 2. She enjoyed big-band music, playing pinnacle, bingo, crossword puzzles and watching Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. Survivors include two sons, Gerald "Jerry" Duncan of Oxford, Ala., and Steve Duncan of West Des Moines; three grandchildren; and one sister, Janace Woodside of Sioux City. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son in infancy and one sister. There will be no visitation. The funeral for Mrs. Duncan will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Trevor Davis officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the St. Labre Indian School, 1000 Tongue River Road, Ashland, Mont. 59004.
