Lamonte “Monte” Charles Duke , 85, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 4:13 am Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa.
Born May 17, 1930, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Charles Bear and Pauline Mildred Williams Duke.
Lamonte graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. He was an amazing baseball player in his youth and was the winning lefty pitcher for BHS when they won the state championship in 1946. He coached many youth baseball teams in the area. He was an avid Packers fan and Cardinals fan. He loved playing pool and spending time with family and friends. He was an electrical engineer for many companies in Burlington and the surrounding area. He was a member of the Eagles Club and past member of the Moose Club. He was of the Catholic faith and had a great love for both God and family. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor even through his battles with health issues as he fought his final hard game.
Survivors include three sons, Gregory (Lisa) Duke of Burlington, IA, Kevin (Janetta) Duke of Phoenix, AZ, and Michael Duke of Mansfield, TX; one daughter, Karla (Dennis) Standard of Burlington, IA; two brothers, Don (Donna) Duke and Dennis (Teresa) Duke, both of Burlington, IA, two sisters, Shirley (Jack) Weeks of Carman, IL and Cindy (Dennis) Taylor of Muscatine, IA, 14 grandchildren, Nicole (Andrew) Rae, Allisha (Kyle) Kniffen, Natalie (Kevin) Reinhart, Landon Duke, Cameron Duke, Justin Duke, Garrett Duke, Logan (Mindy) McDaniel, Rachel Hayden, Tyler McDaniel, Steve (Sarah) Reynolds, Dave Reynolds, Maria (Jeremy) Shafer and Ashley Welch; fifteen great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Dave McDaniel of Rock Island, IL; former wives, Shirley Simms of Burlington, IA and Lois Martin Duke of West Burlington, IA; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Debra McDaniel and Linda Duke; one son, Stephen Duke and second wife, Nora DeKraai Duke.
The Memorial Service for Lamonte “Monte” Duke will be on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St. with Fr. David Steinle officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Big Muddy’s following the burial.
Visitation will be on Thursday from noon until 6:30 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 until 6:30 p.m. at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St.
