Richard Duane "R.D." Dowell, 69, of Burlington, died Monday, August 25, 2014 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
Born June 23, 1945 in Burlington, he was the son of Cleo Benjamin and Edith Marcella (Miller) Dowell. On October 22, 1966 he married Beverly Jewell Hall in Washington, Iowa. She died November 14, 1991.
R.D. was a heavy equipment operator for several years. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the V.F.W. #10102, Moose Lodge #579 and Eagles Aerie #150. He was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle rider and enjoyed playing cards. He served overseas in the Army from 1963 until 1965.
Survivors include his mother, Edith Marcella Dowell of Stronghurst, IL; four children, Brett Dowell of Kingston, Schlena Dowell - Jones of Pewaukee, WI, Kevin Duane Dowell of Casa, AR and Christina Drefahl of Heartland, WI; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; eight siblings, Teresa Snowden of Burlington, Tanya Chewning of Kirkwood, IL, Joan Gerling of Burlington, Roger Dowell of Lomax, Benny Dowell of Burlington, Tommy Dowell of Burlington, Dawn Dowell-Reverend of Burlington and Marcia Dowell-Trout of Stronghurst; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, wife and one brother Randy Dowell.
The funeral service for Mr. Dowell will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 30th in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David Mixon will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 29th in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Disabled Veterans or The Wounded Warriors Project.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the funeral service.
