Richard Welllington Dillon, 85, of Burlington, died at 6:04 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 6, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert S. and Blanche E. Wellington Dillon. On Aug. 29, 1948, he married Arlene P. Dye in Ottumwa. She died March 18, 2010. Mr. Dillon worked 23 years at the Burlington Fire Department. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1943. He served from 1944 to 1946 in the Marine Corps in the Pacific, with the First Marine Division during World War II, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was a member of the Marines' first Amphibious Tractor Co. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Hamilton-Walters Marine Corp League, Ski Iowans, and Bike Burlington. He volunteered at Des Moines County Historical Society. He enjoyed the outdoors. Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Grundman of Corning; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cheryl Mihalevich of Shelbina, MO, and Wanda George of El Paso, Ill.; nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter and his parents. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Dillon will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Rigdon officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be at Hass-Thielen community room following burial. Memorials have been established for Des Moines County Humane Society and Asbury United Methodist Church.
