Waldo Henry Diercks, 91, of Burlington, died at 11:30 AM Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the Great River Medical Center - Klein Center in Burlington. Born April 20, 1915, in Burlington, he was the son of Herman C. and Caroline Freytag Diercks. On June 8, 1941, he married Elizabeth Ruth Morlock at Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington. She died January 6, 1995. Mr. Diercks worked for 37 years at Railroad Express Company, nine years at Burlington Bank and Trust, and also at the Burlington Medical Center Parking Garage. He was a graduate of Burlington High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II for four years. He was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ where he was baptized and married. He was also a 70 year member of Des Moines Lodge #1 AF&AM, where he was a Past Master, York Rite Bodies, KAABA Shrine, where he served as treasurer, E.C. Blackmar Chapter #306 of the Eastern Star where he was a past Patron, the White Shrine, American Legion Post #52, and a member of United Commercial Travelers. He was a people person, enjoyed growing tomatoes, and an avid animal lover. After his retirement he did a lot of volunteering. Survivors include his friends and caregivers, Jim (Martha) Wilson of Burlington; several nieces and nephews, including, Del (Bonnie) Diercks of Burlington and Kathy Key of West Burlington. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers. Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Sunday, April 15, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with family receiving friends following a 4:00 PM Masonic Rites Service until 6:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Diercks will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 16, in the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Moberg officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Zion United Church of Christ and Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.
