Obituary
A brief announcement was recently made in The Hawk-Eye of the death of Mrs. Martha Amelia Waite, at Peru, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, February 26, 1898. The following sketch is from the Sedan Kansas, Times-Star, of the 4th instant:
"Mrs. Waite was the daughter of Ephraim and Ala Amelia (Sperry) Clark and was born in Talmadge, in northeastern Ohio, February 1, 1819, and was married to John Waite at Ravenna Ohio, April 9, 1835. They lived at Ravenna until their removal to Burlington, Iowa, in 1867, where Mr. Waite engaged in merchandising and subsequently in farming near the city, unti old age and loss of vision compelled him to give up the active life he had always followed. In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Waite visited their daughter, Mrs. Randall M. Hartzell, near Peru, in this county, where Mr. Waite's increasing infirmities prolongs his stay and his death occurred June 11, 1894, as announced in the Times-Star at that time. The good wife and loving mother now follows him at the age of 79 years and 26 days. Mrs. Waite was a woman of untiring energy, ambitious, hopeful and wholly devoted to her family and every good cause. A member of the Methodist Episcopal church from girlhood, an earnest Christian, a true wife, loving mother and kind neighbor, she had many warm friends, not a few of whom have preceded her to the future life. Those remaining will mourn the loss of her companionship. Mr. and Mrs. Waite had three children, one of whom died in early childhood. Two of them are living; Mrs. Mary Waite Hartzell, of Peru, and Mr. John L. Waite, of Burlington, Iowa. The funeral services were conducted at the residence last Monday morning by Rev. B.M. Powell, of Sedan, and the remains were taken to Burlington, Iowa, for interment.
